COMMON ACTIVITY

2017 Common Activity "BCIO EnviroRangers" (Healing the world one square at a time)

2024/08/20 23

Humans globally, are having devastating impacts on the natural environment, including deforestation, habitat destruction, pollution and exploitation of natural resources. These impacts are leading to the loss of unique wildlife and whole ecosystems, decreased air and water quality, rising sea levels, climate change and negative health implications.

We as BCIO EnviroRangers can make a difference and help to heal our world!

This Common Activity aims to:
-Show that environmental problems are global and require a global commitment
-Show that the global BCIO network is contributing to positive environmental changes

Guidelines:

Part 1: Video Conference

Aim: To increase inter-BC relations.

Each BC has been put into a group of 3. Each group will have a video conference using Skpye or a similar platform. During the meeting the following topics will be discussed:

• What is special/unique about each country’s environment?

• Some environmental problems in each country

• Ideas for an action to help the local environment which the BCs can complete (actions can be different in each BC to suit your environmental issues)

At the end of the meeting, use video recording application (for example Skype) to record a summary of the discussion and submit to BCIO (via Google Drive or similar method) by November 30th. The recorded video should also be used to share the discussion with BC members unable to attend the meeting.

Part 2: Enviro Quilt
Aim: To create a visual representation of the positive actions we as EnviroRangers are committed to make to our environment.
Each BC will meet to watch and discuss the Video Conference videos. Each BC will then make a creative and colourful fabric square to be sewn together and displayed as one large quilt at the 30th APCC.
A 1 m x 1 m square made of light canvas cloth material (calico), should be divided into quarters. Each quarter should creatively demonstrate one of the following topics.
1. The uniqueness of your country’s environment
2. Environmental issues in your country
3. Positive action you will complete to help the environment
4. BC/APCC mission and/or country/BC logo

Important: leave a 5cm border around all edges of the square so it can be sewn together.
Squares should be sent to BCIO office with Liaison Officer documents in March so that BRIDGE CLUB Japan can sew the squares together. It will be displayed at the 30th APCC.
We recommend a video be made of the making of your square to share on social media for public relation purposes.

Part 3: Environmental Action
Everyone can do something positive for the environment, whether it’s big or small. By completing an environmental action the public will see that BCIO is contributing to positive environmental change.
As discussed in your Video Conference, an environmental action will be completed by each BC. Some examples of such actions include, but are not limited to;
* Education
* Social media campaign
* Tree planting
* Recycling/ Zero waste
* BC community garden
* Coast/beach/river clean up

A 1-1 ½ minute video of your BC completing the action will be submitted to BCIO (via Google Drive or similar method) by May 20th and highlights of this will be put together as a collaborative video and shown at the 30th APCC.

Deadlines:
Part 1- Video conference video submitted by November 30th
Part 2- Completed Enviro Quilt square sent with Liaison Officer documents in March
Part 3- Video of environmental action submitted by May 20th

All submission must be send to:  enviroranges@gmail.com

Awards
Awards will be given at the 2018 PA camp and will be based on member participation, creativity (of action and quilt square) and publicity (how many likes/shares videos of each sections receive).
